Jonkershoek Valley is the smallest, coolest, and wettest Wine of Origin ward within Stellenbosch — a narrow, steep-sided valley climbing eastward from Stellenbosch town into the Jonkershoek and Stellenbosch Mountains at the edge of the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. Annual rainfall ranges from roughly 800mm on the valley floor to as much as 2,000mm at altitude, the highest in Stellenbosch, while vineyards climb from about 140 metres to over 950 metres and are cooled further by afternoon southeasterly winds funnelling up the valley. Soils are a distinctive core of weathered Malmesbury shale overlaid by decomposed granite, with pockets of Table Mountain sandstone at higher elevations, producing fine-grained, perfumed, structurally serious reds. The ward's modern reputation rests on single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from pioneering estates such as Neil Ellis and Stark-Condé, alongside excellent Syrah and Bordeaux-style blends.

Best for

Collectors seeking elegant, structured single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and cool-climate Bordeaux blends.

Food Pairings

Suits grilled ribeye or sirloin, roast lamb with rosemary, venison, and biltong, whose salty concentration echoes the wine's own intensity; the firm tannins also stand up to slow-braised bobotie and mature, hard cheeses like aged gouda or cheddar.
