Klein River is a small, boutique Wine of Origin ward within South Africa's Overberg district, tucked in the Klein River valley near the historic village of Stanford. Shielded by the Kleinrivier Mountains — the southernmost range in Africa — the ward is warmer than coastal Walker Bay yet still tempered by afternoon sea breezes that funnel through the Akkedis Valley, giving vines a long, even ripening season. Soils range from Bokkeveld shale and Table Mountain sandstone on the higher slopes to alluvial river-bank deposits, supporting structured Shiraz and Petit Verdot alongside vibrant Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Raka Wines, founded by the Dreyer family in 1999, spent years lobbying for the ward's official recognition and remains its defining producer, joined more recently by boutique names such as Kershaw Wines and Boschrivier.
Best for
Explorers seeking South Africa's lesser-known cool-climate Shiraz and Petit Verdot.
Food Pairings
Structured Shiraz and Petit Verdot pair well with grilled lamb, venison, and braai-style beef, while the ward's Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc suit fresh Walker Bay oysters and grilled linefish.

Boschrivier Wine Estate
Boschrivier Wine Estate is a family-owned boutique winery in the Akkedisberg Valley at the foot of the Klein River Mountains, on the R326 about 17km from Stanford in the Overberg. Paediatrician Dr Theo de Villiers converted his grandfather's wheat and onion farm into vineyards in 1998, planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz on virgin shale soils; the first bottle of Boschrivier Shiraz was released in 2001 and the estate has since built a reputation for full-bodied, well-balanced, award-winning Shiraz (the 2002 vintage earned 3.5 stars in the John Platter Wine Guide and a Bronze at the Veritas Awards). The estate today also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc. The De Villiers family, descendants of French Huguenots who settled in the Cape in 1689, run the property across two farms: Remhoogte, whose converted manor house houses the tasting room and coffee shop, and Boschkloof, which offers self-catering accommodation. The estate's motto, 'la main à l'oeuvre' (hand at work), reflects its small-batch, hands-on approach; Ficky de Villiers represents the third generation of the family to continue the winemaking legacy.

Raka Wines
Founded by Piet and Elna Dreyer, who bought the Remhoogte farm 17km from Stanford in 1982 and planted their first 10 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz in 1999, Raka Wines is the defining producer of South Africa's Klein River ward. The name honors Raka, Piet Dreyer's black squid-fishing trawler, painted dark so the cuttlefish ink would not show. Sheltered by the Kleinrivier Mountains — Africa's southernmost range — and cooled by afternoon breezes off Walker Bay, the now 68-hectare estate is a true family affair: son Josef (an Elsenburg-trained winemaker since the 2007 harvest) crafts the wines, son Pieter manages the vineyards, daughter Jorika runs marketing and sales, and eldest son Gerhard oversees the family's fishing operations. The Dreyers spent years lobbying South African wine authorities before Klein River was recognised as an official Wine of Origin ward, and Raka remains its flagship estate, known for the Platter's-lauded Biography Shiraz and the five-variety Bordeaux blend Quinary, alongside Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese and Sauvignon Blanc.
