About Boschrivier Wine Estate

Boschrivier Wine Estate is a family-owned boutique winery in the Akkedisberg Valley at the foot of the Klein River Mountains, on the R326 about 17km from Stanford in the Overberg. Paediatrician Dr Theo de Villiers converted his grandfather's wheat and onion farm into vineyards in 1998, planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz on virgin shale soils; the first bottle of Boschrivier Shiraz was released in 2001 and the estate has since built a reputation for full-bodied, well-balanced, award-winning Shiraz (the 2002 vintage earned 3.5 stars in the John Platter Wine Guide and a Bronze at the Veritas Awards). The estate today also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc. The De Villiers family, descendants of French Huguenots who settled in the Cape in 1689, run the property across two farms: Remhoogte, whose converted manor house houses the tasting room and coffee shop, and Boschkloof, which offers self-catering accommodation. The estate's motto, 'la main à l'oeuvre' (hand at work), reflects its small-batch, hands-on approach; Ficky de Villiers represents the third generation of the family to continue the winemaking legacy.
