Port Spark is a rare sparkling wine from Wine Workshop Aizu made from 100% Portland grapes, an American-bred green-skinned table grape (a cross of Champion and Lutie) grown in Aizu, Fukushima. Like all of the winery's wines, it is fermented and aged in small 23-liter glass carboys rather than wood, preserving the grape's natural aroma without any oak influence. Bottled at 375ml and 7% ABV, it showcases Portland's fresh, fruity, slightly Labrusca-like character in a light, dry, effervescent style — one of only four sparkling releases from the winery, alongside its apple cider, La France perry, and Yamabudou Spark.
One of the few sparkling wines in Japan made from the table grape Portland — its grapey, Labrusca aroma turned effervescent is a small but genuine curiosity worth trying.
