Merlot-Ai is VOTANO WINE's entry-level, single-varietal Merlot from the Seba district of Shiojiri, Nagano (Kikyogahara Wine Valley). Unlike the winery's flagship barrel-aged 'Merlot' (from its own late-picked estate fruit) or its field-blend 'Seba Rosso', Merlot-Ai is made from Merlot grapes grown by neighboring farmers under VOTANO's direct viticultural guidance on the same clay-inflected, Kikyogahara-style alluvial soil — hence the 'Ai' ('love'/'care') in the name, referring to the mentored, nearby-grown fruit rather than a second grape variety. Barrel-aged and dry, it shows garnet color with violet and fig aromatics, well-balanced acidity and moderately firm tannins that soften into sweeter aromatics with air and bottle age. Wine critic Jamie Goode rated the 2016 vintage 91/100, praising its 'sappy... vital character' and calling it 'light, juicy and quite natural-tasting' — one of the more vivacious reds in the VOTANO lineup. Explicitly positioned by the winery as an approachable, beginner-friendly red.
Don't be fooled by the humble price tag — this is the most vividly alive red in VOTANO's lineup. Jamie Goode gave it 91/100 and called out its 'vital character' that's 'missing in the other reds'; it's proof that VOTANO's guided-vineyard fruit can outshine the estate's own flagship bottling on pure drinkability.
New to wine?
The winery's own recommended starting point for red wine beginners — soft tannins, ripe fruit, and an easy, juicy character.
Food Pairings
Its soft tannins and gentle red-fruit profile make it food-friendly: try it with grilled chicken, pork dishes, or mild hard cheeses. Light enough to serve slightly chilled with charcuterie.
When to drink it
Casual weeknight dinners, a first step into red wine, or introducing friends to Japanese Merlot.
Terroir & Winemaking
Single-varietal Merlot, barrel-aged, dry (ABV 13% in the 2024 release; historically 12–13% depending on vintage). Sourced from neighboring growers cultivated under VOTANO WINE's direct guidance rather than the estate's own Seba vineyard, on the same clay-rich, Kikyogahara-style alluvial soil along the Narai River. Fermented and aged using the winery's house style of minimal intervention.

- Is Merlot-Ai a blend of two grape varieties, Merlot and 'Ai'?
- No. Despite the hyphenated name, Merlot-Ai is a single-varietal 100% Merlot wine. 'Ai' (愛, 'love'/'care') refers to the fact that the grapes are grown by neighboring farmers under VOTANO WINE's direct guidance rather than on the estate's own Seba vineyard — it is not a second grape variety.
- What does Merlot-Ai taste like?
- Garnet-colored with violet and fig aromatics, balanced acidity, and moderately firm tannins that soften into sweeter notes with time in the glass or bottle. Critic Jamie Goode described it as sappy, fresh, and 'quite natural-tasting' with a vital, juicy character.
- Is Merlot-Ai a good wine for beginners?
- Yes — VOTANO WINE explicitly recommends it as an entry point for red wine beginners, thanks to its soft tannins and approachable, fruit-forward style.
- What food pairs well with Merlot-Ai?
- Its gentle tannins and ripe red-fruit character pair well with grilled chicken, pork dishes, mushrooms, and mild cheeses — versatile enough for both Western and Japanese home cooking.
