Fulfulle Rouge is the red-wine member of Pino Collina's casual, drink-often 'Fulfulle' line, grown on the historic Matsugaoka plateau in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is an assemblage of estate-grown Merlot, Syrah, and Pinot Noir, hand-harvested in late October as the grapes reach full ripeness near the season's first snow on Mt. Gassan, then aged gently in French oak. True to the winery's vin naturel philosophy of pesticide-free farming and gravity-flow, minimal-intervention winemaking, the wine shows sweet berry aromatics, soft, gentle tannins, and a smooth, easy-drinking medium body. Like its Fulfulle Blanc and Fulfulle Chardonnay siblings, it is designed as an everyday table wine rather than a prestige showpiece such as Tsuruoka Koshu.
The most food-versatile red in Pino Collina's line-up — proof that a Merlot-Syrah-Pinot Noir blend from Yamagata can be both natural and effortlessly drinkable.
