Founded in 1939 in the Akayu area of Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture, Oura Budoshu (Oura Winery) is a historic, family-run winery now in its fourth generation under winemaker Hiroo Oura. Long known as a contract producer for major Japanese wine manufacturers, the winery has in recent years focused on its own regional label, crafting wine that reflects the landscape and culture of the Okitama basin. Working almost exclusively with Yamagata-grown grapes — including Delaware, Muscat Bailey A, Black Queen, and Bailey Alicante A sourced from contracted growers and its own vineyards — Oura produces approachable, food-friendly wines that have won awards at the Japan Wine Competition and the Sakura Wine Award.
