Bailey A Osozumi Taru (Barrel) is the oak-aged sibling of Ohizumi Winery's tank-aged 'Bailey A Osozumi,' made from fully ripened Muscat Bailey A grapes hand-harvested in October from a single vineyard in Shimo-Iwasaki, Katsunuma, Koshu City, Yamanashi. After fermentation the wine is aged for six months in French oak barrels, adding oak spice and a rounder texture over the late-harvest fruit's natural concentration. It is sold as an independent product with its own vintage lineup, distinct in both cellar treatment and price (¥3,500) from the tank-aged, lower-priced 'Bailey A Osozumi' (¥2,800).
The oak treatment is exactly what late-harvest Bailey A needs: just enough barrel spice to add structure without masking the grape's signature strawberry-candy fruit.
New to wine?
A gentle, food-friendly introduction to oak-aged Japanese red wine — the barrel rounds out the tannins without overpowering the fruit.
Food Pairings
The producer recommends pairing with teriyaki and yakitori-sauce grilled dishes, simmered pork belly (buta no kakuni), and sukiyaki — dishes with sweet-savory soy glazes that echo the oak's spice notes. Also pairs well with grilled meats and aged hard cheeses.
When to drink it
Dinner featuring grilled or simmered soy-glazed dishes, gifting, or a step up from everyday table wine.
