Founded in 1884 in Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture, Nasu Wine (Watanabe Vineyard Brewery) is one of Japan's oldest wineries, cultivating grapes and producing wine on the same estate for over 140 years. Fourth-generation owner Yoshinari Watanabe studied viticulture and enology at the University of Bordeaux and trained at renowned chateaux including Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and Chateau Valandraud under consultant Michel Rolland. He combines traditional pergola-trained Muscat Bailey A winemaking, passed down since the founding, with Guyot-trained Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The estate farms roughly 4 hectares of vineyards within a 20-hectare property and produces about 17,000 bottles a year, aiming to craft world-class wines that express the terroir of Nasu.
