YOAKENO Tennohara Koshu is a single-vineyard white made entirely from Koshu grapes grown at Monde Winery's own Monde Farm in the Tennohara district of Akeno, Hokuto City, Yamanashi -- a high-elevation site (roughly 750m) with volcanic ash soils shaped by Mt. Yatsugatake. Free-run juice is fermented at low temperature in stainless steel tanks, then aged on the lees (sur lie) for six months to build texture and umami. The result is a dry, golden-yellow white with layered aromas of lemon, kabosu, pear, stewed apple, honey and a hint of mint, framed by crisp acidity and a firm, hard-water-like minerality that lingers into a lemon-peel finish.
The sur lie aging is what sets this Koshu apart -- six months on the lees gives it a textural weight and umami depth that most everyday Koshu simply doesn't have.
New to wine?
A great way to taste how far Koshu has come -- clean and citrusy but with real texture from the lees aging, so it never feels thin.
Food Pairings
Pairs beautifully with tempura, seared bonito (katsuo tataki), smoked duck, and other dishes with a touch of umami or smoke; its herbal, citrus edge also stands up well to slightly spiced or salt-cured preparations.
When to drink it
Everyday dinners with Japanese food, especially tempura or grilled fish nights, and a good introduction bottle for guests new to Koshu.
Terroir & Winemaking
100% Koshu from the Tennohara estate vineyard (Akeno, Hokuto City, Yamanashi; ~750m elevation, volcanic ash soils). The 2023 vintage was hand-harvested on October 18, pressed for free-run juice, fermented at low temperature in stainless steel, then aged sur lie for approximately 6 months. Dry style, ABV 12%, 750ml bottle.
