Makioka Yama Sauvignon is Monde Winery's oak-aged red made entirely from Yama Sauvignon -- a Japanese-bred variety created in 1990 by crossing the indigenous wild mountain grape (Yamabudo) with Cabernet Sauvignon -- sourced from a contracted vineyard in Yamanashi City's Makioka district at roughly 850-900m elevation, the same high hillside behind the winery's own estate-grown Merlot & Black Queen. The wine pours a vivid red-purple, its supple, distinctive tannin structure inherited from the mountain-grape parent balanced against riper, more generous fruit character from its Cabernet Sauvignon lineage. Compared with Monde's own-vineyard Yama Sauvignon bottling, the Makioka version shows a more straightforward, fruit-forward style with retained acidity, offering a clear and accessible introduction to Japan's homegrown Cabernet Sauvignon cross. It was awarded a Silver Medal at the Japan Wine Challenge 2024 and a Bronze Medal in the domestic-hybrid red blend category at the Japan Wine Competition 2024 (2023 vintage).
One of the clearest expressions of Yama Sauvignon's parentage -- mountain-grape tannin structure fused with Cabernet Sauvignon's generosity, and a rare chance to taste Japan's own Bordeaux-cross varietal.
