Tao Pinot Noir is a single-variety red from Komazono Vineyard's mid-tier "Tao" (the Way) range, made entirely from Pinot Noir grown on two of the estate's own Yamanashi plots: the Kawakubo vineyard in Enzan, Koshu City (460m elevation, sandy loam soil, tanaichimonji short-pruned trellis) and the Nishino vineyard in Minami-Alps City. The juice is fermented in a sealed stainless steel tank at low temperature for three weeks, then pressed and aged for eight months in French oak barrels. The result is a dry, medium-bodied red with the ripe red-berry fruit and gentle oak-derived weight typical of well-ripened Japanese Pinot Noir, balanced by moderate acidity that keeps the wine elegant rather than heavy.
One of Komazono's most ambitious bottlings — a Japanese Pinot Noir that shows real oak-aged structure without losing the vineyard's fresh, cool-climate acidity.
New to wine?
A rare Japanese single-variety Pinot Noir — ripe fruit and gentle oak make it an approachable red even for those new to Pinot Noir.
Food Pairings
The ripe berry fruit and gentle oak tannin pair well with duck breast, teriyaki-glazed chicken, or grilled mushrooms. Its moderate acidity also makes it a flexible match for Japanese dishes such as simmered pork (kakuni) or grilled unagi.
When to drink it
Special dinners, gifting, and pairing with Japanese-Western fusion cuisine.
