Louange Sun Semillon is a single-varietal white wine from Kitanoro Jozo, a small family-run winery in Ichinomiya-cho, Fuefuki City, Yamanashi. Made entirely from Sun Semillon — a golden-skinned white grape bred by the Yamanashi Prefectural Fruit Tree Experiment Station from a cross of Fuefuki and Gros Semillon, trial-planted from 1991 and officially registered as a new variety in 2000 — the wine shows the grape's signature citrus aromatics and rounded, honeyed fruit character reminiscent of true Semillon. Finished off-dry, it opens sweet on the palate before closing with a clean, crisp finish. It is part of the winery's LOUANGE line of single-varietal European and rare-variety wines, alongside LOUANGE Merlot, LOUANGE Cabernet Sauvignon, and LOUANGE Chardonnay.

Sommelier's Note

Sun Semillon is Yamanashi's own answer to Semillon — a rare, homegrown variety that almost no producer outside Kitanoro Jozo bottles as a single varietal, making this wine a genuine curiosity for anyone exploring Japan's lesser-known indigenous grapes.

New to wine?

A gentle, aromatic introduction to one of Yamanashi's rarest homegrown grape varieties — approachable and easy to enjoy even for first-time Japanese wine drinkers.

Food Pairings

Its bright citrus character and touch of sweetness make it a natural match for dishes with a savory-sweet edge — the winery itself recommends pairing its Sun Semillon wines with simmered offal (motsuni) and pan-seared foie gras. It also works well with soft, creamy cheeses and dishes glazed in a sweet-savory sauce, such as teriyaki.

When to drink it

Everyday sipping, casual gatherings, and pairing with rich or savory-sweet dishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grape is Louange Sun Semillon made from?
It is made entirely from Sun Semillon, a golden-skinned white grape bred in Yamanashi from a cross of Fuefuki and Gros Semillon and officially registered as a new variety in 2000 — a distinct Japanese variety, not a clone or synonym of the classic Bordeaux grape Semillon, despite the similar name.
Is Louange Sun Semillon sweet or dry?
It is an off-dry (medium, 'chūkuchi') white wine — sweet on entry with a clean, crisp finish, rather than a fully dry or fully sweet style.
What food pairs well with this wine?
Its citrus aromatics and light sweetness pair well with savory-sweet dishes such as simmered offal (motsuni), pan-seared foie gras, and teriyaki-glazed dishes, as well as soft, creamy cheeses.
Is Sun Semillon related to the French Semillon grape?
Despite the name, Sun Semillon is a separate Japanese-bred hybrid variety (Fuefuki × Gros Semillon) developed by the Yamanashi Prefectural Fruit Tree Experiment Station, not a strain of the French Semillon grape — though its golden color and body echo classic Semillon.
