Founded in 1953 in Suvereto on the Tuscan coast, Gualdo del Re began as a mixed farm before specializing in viticulture in the 1980s. Since 2000, celebrated winemaker Barbara Tamburini — twice named Italy's Best Enologist — has shaped the estate's style, most notably pioneering the pure-Merlot bottling I'Rennero, a five-time winner of the MondoMerlot 'Best Merlot in Italy' award. The roughly 25-27 hectares of vineyards sit in a sunlit hillside amphitheatre facing the island of Elba, farmed without irrigation despite Suvereto's hot summers. In 2022 the estate passed from the founding Rossi family to a new ownership group led by entrepreneur Mauro Gestri, with Tamburini continuing as winemaker and a renewed focus on sustainability. The winery produces around 100,000 bottles a year, spanning native Tuscan varieties (Sangiovese, Vermentino) and international grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon) across Suvereto DOCG and Val di Cornia DOC appellations.
