Coltrada is a small family winery run by husband-and-wife team Kozo and Michiko Hosaka in Tetta, Niimi City, Okayama Prefecture — the same limestone karst plateau that gave rise to Domaine Tetta. Inspired by a trip through Italy, the couple planted their first vines in 2013, trained locally, and released early vintages under contract fermentation at La Grande Colline in Okayama before completing their own winery in 2021. Since the 2017 harvest they have crafted their reds and whites from grapes alone, with no additives, minimal pesticide use, and no herbicides. Their name — a fusion of the Italian coltivare (to cultivate) and strada (road) — echoes both their own names and the shared path of cultivating this land. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shokoshi and Muscat Bailey A share the plateau with Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Semillon, alongside wheat and azuki beans grown in reclaimed nearby fields.

Who Is This For?

For those drawn to small-production, minimal-intervention Japanese wine, and to the story of a couple who cleared an abandoned limestone hillside by hand and named their winery after their own two names.
