Castello di Fonterutoli

Sangiovese · Merlot

About this wine

First released with the 1992 vintage, Siepi is Castello di Fonterutoli's benchmark Super Tuscan and one of the estate's most celebrated wines, born from the Mazzei family's early-1980s decision to plant Merlot alongside Sangiovese in the Siepi vineyard. The equal Sangiovese-Merlot blend has remained unchanged since its debut, delivering a complex, powerful, and elegant wine with remarkable aging potential.

Beginner's Note

A world-class Super Tuscan that perfectly balances Italian tradition (Sangiovese) with international polish (Merlot).

Sommelier's Note

Terroir & Winemaking

An equal blend of Sangiovese and Merlot (50/50), unchanged since the first 1992 vintage. Grapes are harvested and fermented separately in stainless steel at controlled temperature, then aged approximately 18 months in French oak barriques (about 70% new), followed by several months of bottle aging before release.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Siepi taste like?
Dark berries, black cherries, sweet spice, and tobacco, supported by velvety, well-integrated tannins.
Why does Siepi blend Sangiovese with Merlot?
The Mazzei family planted Merlot in the Siepi vineyard in the early 1980s because its microclimate and soil allowed both varieties to reach ideal phenolic ripeness, complementing Sangiovese's structure with Merlot's roundness.
When is the best time to drink it?
It is best enjoyed 5 to 15 years after the vintage to fully appreciate its complexity, though it can age well beyond that.
