About this wine

Sourced from the Bründlmayer family's core holdings in the Zöbinger Heiligenstein — a Perm-era desert sandstone outcrop containing volcanic inclusions and fossilized primeval plant material — this Erste Lage Riesling is one of Kamptal's most site-transparent wines. Vines here are trained partly on the estate's signature Lyra system and partly on traditional Guyot, with berries hanging well clear of the soil to protect against rot. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by extended lees contact in large old oak casks. The result is racy, mineral-driven Riesling with notes of Amalfi lemon, pink grapefruit, and wet stone, framed by bright, precise acidity and a long, saline finish.

Beginner's Note

A benchmark cool-climate Riesling — bone dry, laser-focused, and a great intro to Austrian terroir wine.

Sommelier's Note

"This is the wine that proves Kamptal Riesling belongs in the same conversation as the Mosel and the Rheingau — precise, mineral, and utterly age-worthy."

Food Pairings

A natural match for grilled trout, oysters, and goat cheese; the racy acidity also cuts through fatty fish like unagi or saba shioyaki. Try it with tempura or sashimi of white-fleshed fish for a Japanese-style pairing.

When to drink it

Seafood-focused dinners, special-occasion tastings, and any moment calling for a serious, age-worthy white.

Terroir & Winemaking

Hand-harvested from Perm sandstone parcels in the Zöbinger Heiligenstein (partly Lyra-trained, partly Guyot). Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then aged on fine lees in large old oak (Stück/Halbstück) for several months before bottling; no new oak is used.
