About this wine

A historic Super Tuscan blending Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and Cabernet Sauvignon in roughly equal measure, one of the estate's oldest bottlings. Deep ruby red with purple highlights, opening with ripe fruit and violet before evolving into graphite and delicate vanilla. Dense and well-structured on the palate, with plum and blueberry giving way to a balsamic, spicy finish. Aged around 18 months in a mix of French oak barriques and large Slavonian oak casks.

Beginner's Note

Sommelier's Note

"Grifi is the quiet elder statesman of Avignonesi's Super Tuscans — less flashy than Desiderio, but every bit as age-worthy and arguably more food-versatile."

Excellent with beef short rib, venison, and bold Bolognese-style pasta. The firm tannins also suit aged hard cheeses.
