Pape is the flagship red of Quinta da Pellada, a 50/50 field-selection blend of Touriga Nacional from the Outeiro vineyard and Baga from Quinta da Pellada itself. Grapes are hand-harvested into small boxes and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks with roughly 12 days of maceration, then aged around 30 months in 2nd/3rd-use French oak barrels (400L and 600L). The result is a perfumed, structured wine of considerable concentration but modest alcohol, built for serious cellaring. Multiple vintages (2002, 2008, and others) have scored in the low-to-mid 90s from critics such as Falstaff.
Pape is the wine that proves Dão can rival Burgundy for structure and terroir transparency — a serious collector's bottle from Portugal's most respected winemaker.
New to wine?
Not a beginner's wine — it's dense and tannic in youth — but a benchmark bottle for anyone curious about how age-worthy Dão reds can be.
Food Pairings
A powerful, tannin-driven wine that calls for hearty, fatty dishes: roast lamb, game birds, and aged hard cheeses are classic matches. In a Japanese context it stands up well to grilled wagyu with soy-based tare, unagi kabayaki, or simmered beef and burdock (gyu-gobo).
When to drink it
Special-occasion dinners, milestone celebrations, or serious cellar-tasting nights.
