Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is the highest and furthest-inland of the three wards that make up the Hemel-en-Aarde area within Walker Bay, South Africa, with vineyards planted between 240 and 400 metres above sea level on north-facing slopes. Its ancient Bokkeveld shale soils, rich in clay and iron and threaded with 560-million-year-old quartz seams, combine with the ward's elevation to produce the latest-ripening and most structurally intense wines in the district. Gazetted as its own Wine of Origin ward in June 2009, the Ridge is anchored by flagship producers Ataraxia, Creation, and Restless River, whose Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are prized for their tension, minerality, and ageing potential.
Best for
Collectors seeking structured, age-worthy Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with vivid mineral tension.
Food Pairings
Roasted duck breast, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, and rich lobster or crab dishes that match the wines' structure and mineral drive.

Ataraxia Wines
Ataraxia Wines was founded in 2004 by Kevin Grant and his wife Hanli on the Skyfields farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, near Hermanus, South Africa. Before starting Ataraxia, Kevin spent ten vintages (1995-2004) as head winemaker at neighbouring Hamilton Russell Vineyards, where he developed his cool-climate, Burgundian-influenced approach to winemaking. The estate's name is drawn from the Greek word for a serene state of mind, free of worry - a philosophy Kevin carries into the cellar as a self-described 'soil farmer' who favours minimal intervention and lets the ancient, clay-rich soils of the Ridge speak through the wines. Ataraxia has become a flagship producer of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, best known for a small, focused range: an unwooded Sauvignon Blanc, an unapologetically wooded Chardonnay, an expressive Pinot Noir, and a Bordeaux-style red blend named Serenity. The estate's chapel-like tasting room, set roughly 400 metres above sea level with sweeping views to the ocean, is one of the most photographed cellar doors in the Cape.

Creation Wines
Founded in 2002 by Swiss-born Jean-Claude (JC) Martin and South African Carolyn Martin (née Finlayson), Creation Wines was one of the first estates to plant vines on the previously untouched Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in Walker Bay. The estate's cool maritime climate and clay-rich soils are ideally suited to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, alongside Sauvignon Blanc and other varietals. Creation is equally renowned for its acclaimed restaurant, where a five-course Wine and Food Pairing menu is built around the philosophy that "the wine leads, and the dish responds." The estate was ranked South Africa's top vineyard in the 2022 World's 50 Best Vineyards and received the Great Wine Capitals 2023 Wine Tourism Restaurant Award.

Francis Wines
Francis Wines is a boutique producer on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, South Africa, founded by Burton Francis, a former professional rugby player who fell in love with wine while playing in France and later studied at the Burgundy School of Business. Debuting with the 2022 vintage in August 2023, the label works with consulting winemaker Kevin Grant of Ataraxia to craft small-batch, single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Bokkeveld shale soils in a Burgundian-inspired style. Five percent of every bottle sold funds the Francis Academy, supporting youth rugby and wine-education programs.

La Vierge
La Vierge is a family-run cool-climate estate on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge above Hermanus in South Africa's Western Cape, founded by Peter Clarke in the mid-2000s. Its name — French for 'the virgin' — reflects Clarke's original vision: to plant dryland vineyards on untouched ('virgin') soils within a natural amphitheatre fanned by cool Atlantic air. The estate's guiding philosophy, 'Trust the Site,' emphasizes minimal intervention and letting each vineyard block's clay-rich Bokkeveld shale, aspect, and cooling coastal breezes shape distinctive, site-specific fruit. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sit at the heart of the range — including the flagship La Vierge Noir and the pinnacle Apogee bottlings — alongside Sauvignon Blanc (Original Sin), small parcels of Syrah, and evocatively labelled blends within the Story Teller collection. A tasting room, restaurant, and cottage accommodation complete the estate, and La Vierge has been recognized among the IWSC's Top 50 wine producers worldwide.

Tesselaarsdal Wines
Tesselaarsdal Wines was founded in 2015 by Berene Sauls, who joined Hamilton Russell Vineyards in 2001 as a 19-year-old au pair before moving into office roles covering wine exports, labelling and warehouse logistics over some fifteen years there. She named her own label after Tesselaarsdal, the historic Overberg farming hamlet where she was born, whose land was bequeathed in 1832 by the widow of Johannes Tesselaar to freed slaves — among them her own ancestors. Sauls is widely recognised as one of South Africa's wine trailblazers for building an estate on that heritage. The wines are a focused pair: a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, both sourced from unirrigated, low-yielding vineyards on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, including fruit from La Vierge Vineyards. The Pinot Noir is fermented with a portion of whole bunches, sometimes foot-trodden, and aged around nine and a half months in French oak barrels; the Chardonnay is split between amphora and François Frères French oak, built on old vines for a taut, mineral style. In 2019 Sauls acquired 16 hectares of land in Tesselaarsdal itself, with plans to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay there and eventually estate-grow the wines that carry her family's name.
