Greyton is one of the smallest and most extreme Wine of Origin wards within South Africa's Overberg district, set in the foothills of the Riviersonderend Mountains near the historic village of the same name. Vineyards climb to 300-325m, placing the ward in Region I on the Davis climate scale — among the coolest classified viticultural sites in the country — with ripening running three to four weeks behind the traditional Western Cape. Soils are a patchwork of decomposed shale, sandstone and clay-loam. Lismore Estate Vineyards, founded by Californian winemaker Samantha O'Keefe, remains the ward's only registered estate, farming 12.5 hectares of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc that have earned international acclaim, particularly for Syrah widely rated among South Africa's finest expressions of the variety.
Best for
Seekers of extreme, high-altitude cool-climate Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Food Pairings
The peppery, structured Syrah suits slow-roasted lamb, venison and braai-style beef, while the bright Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc pair beautifully with grilled linefish and creamy mushroom dishes.

Andy Mitchell Wines
Andy Mitchell Wines is a family-run garagiste winery in Greyton, in the Overberg region of South Africa's Western Cape. Founded in 2003 by the late Andy Mitchell, a qualified Cape Wine Master, together with his wife Vikki, the cellar is literally housed in a single-car garage — the definitive expression of small-batch, hands-on winemaking. Their maiden vintage, a Syrah named 'Breakfast Rock' after a peak on the Greyton-to-McGregor hiking trail, won a Veritas Silver award in 2005. Today the winery is carried on by daughter Olivia, a professional chef, continuing the family's minimal-intervention philosophy. Grapes are drawn from the family's own vines in Greyton as well as selected vineyards in the Helderberg and Bamboesvlei areas, and the tightly limited cellar space means the lineup rotates each vintage between a Cap Classique sparkling (bottled in runs of just 1,000), a partially barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc, a dry Shiraz rosé, Pinot Noir, a Southern Rhône-style blend and a Bordeaux-style blend. Visits are strictly by appointment at the home cellar in Greyton.

Lismore Estate Vineyards
Founded in 2003 by Californian winemaker Samantha O'Keefe, Lismore Estate Vineyards is the sole registered estate in South Africa's Greyton ward, set in the foothills of the Riviersonderend Mountains. Its cool-climate vineyards, ripening three to four weeks later than the rest of the Western Cape, yield elegant, terroir-driven Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. O'Keefe, a Cape Winemakers Guild member since 2018, rebuilt the estate after a devastating 2019 bushfire and helped establish Greyton as its own Wine of Origin ward.

Swallow Hill
Swallow Hill is a tiny, single-vineyard estate a few kilometres outside the village of Greyton in South Africa's Overberg district, run by Dianne and Brian Dawes, who relocated from West Cumbria in the UK. They planted one hectare each of Tempranillo and Viognier between 2008 and 2010 on a north-east-facing slope overlooking the Riviersonderend mountains, choosing Spanish and Rhône varieties rarely seen in the Cape at the time. The vines are farmed organically, and the estate holds WWF Biodiversity in Wine Initiative certification. Wines are made as naturally as possible and vinified in a small cellar beneath the couple's own home, resulting in a hands-on, low-volume operation. The Wine of Origin Greyton range includes a varietal Tempranillo, a Tempranillo Rosé, a wooded white blend called The Natural Blonde, and a red blend called The Red One. Tastings are by appointment only and are typically accompanied by a tapas platter on the estate's stoep or courtyard.
