Lake Toya's volcanic-soil frontier for Hokkaido wine
Sobetsu is a nascent wine appellation in the Toya-Usu UNESCO Global Geopark of southwestern Hokkaido, on the southern shore of Lake Toya beneath the active volcanoes Mount Usu and Showa-Shinzan. Long established as one of Hokkaido's premier fruit-growing districts — with orchards producing cherries, apples, pears, plums, and grapes since the late 19th century — the town's well-drained, phosphorus-rich volcanic ash soils and gentle south-facing slopes have proven equally suited to wine grapes. Kyoto's Tamba Wine began experimental plantings of Pinot Blanc in Sobetsu in 2018, releasing the region's first single-vineyard wine, "Sobetsu Pinot Blanc Sur Lie," in 2020. Since then, additional varieties including Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Scheurebe have been trialed, and 2025 saw the opening of Okutoya Winery in the lakeside Naka-Toya district — the first winery to actually brew wine inside Sobetsu itself.
