Sovana DOC
ソヴァーナDOC
Volcanic-soil Sangiovese from the heart of Maremma.
Sovana DOC is a red and rosé wine appellation in the southeastern Maremma district of southern Tuscany, established in 1999. It covers vineyards in the historic Etruscan towns of Pitigliano, Sorano, and parts of Manciano, bordering the Morellino di Scansano DOC to the north. The zone's volcanic tuff and clay-rich soils give its wines a distinctive mineral character and vibrant acidity. Sovana Rosso and Rosato must contain at least 50% Sangiovese blended with other local non-aromatic red grapes, while single-varietal wines are also permitted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Sangiovese, or Aleatico. Riserva wines undergo at least 18 months of barrel aging plus 6 months in bottle, and a sweet Passito style (minimum 85% Aleatico) is also produced. Red winemaking in the area dates back to Etruscan times, and the appellation remains a small, quality-focused corner of Maremma wine country.
