Seyssel is a white-wine appellation straddling the Rhône at the northwestern edge of the Savoie vineyards, covering the two communes named Seyssel (one in Ain, one in Haute-Savoie) and neighbouring Corbonod. Recognised on 11 February 1942, it is the oldest appellation in Savoie and one of the earliest AOCs in France. Still Seyssel is made from Altesse (locally Roussette), while 'Seyssel Molette' is a still white from the local Molette grape; the sparkling Seyssel Mousseux blends Molette with at least 10% Altesse, sometimes with Chasselas. Vines grow on south- to southeast-facing slopes of limestone scree from the Grand Colombier cliffs, glacial moraine and molasse, under a continental-montane climate. With only around 60 hectares, Seyssel produces delicate, floral wines with notes of violet, iris and white-fleshed fruit, lifted by crisp alpine acidity.
Best for
Drinkers who love delicate, floral, low-alcohol whites and fine traditional-method sparkling wines, and anyone exploring rare Alpine grapes like Altesse and Molette.
Food Pairings
Still Seyssel suits lake fish such as perch and féra, trout meunière, white meats, fondue and Alpine cheeses like Beaufort and Tomme de Savoie. Seyssel Mousseux makes a lively apéritif and pairs with fruit tarts and Saint-Honoré.
