ヴォルネイ

Unrivalled elegance and floral complexity among Côte de Beaune reds; exclusively red wine appellation producing silky Pinot Noir.

Volnay is one of Burgundy's most celebrated red wine appellations, located on the Côte de Beaune between Pommard and Meursault. The village sits at around 300 metres elevation, producing exclusively red wine from Pinot Noir on predominantly limestone and clay soils. Its 213 hectares include 29 Premier Cru vineyards, with Clos des Ducs, Caillerets, Champans, and Taillepieds among the most prestigious. Volnay wines are admired for their elegance, floral perfume, and silky texture rather than power.

Best for: Those who seek refinement over power in Burgundy — Volnay rewards lovers of perfume, finesse, and graceful structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Volnay different from Pommard?
Volnay sits on higher, lighter limestone soils and produces more feminine, floral, and silky wines, while Pommard lies lower with heavier clay soils yielding more structured, muscular reds.
Does Volnay have any Grand Cru vineyards?
No. Volnay has no Grand Cru, but its top Premier Crus such as Clos des Ducs (monopole of Marquis d'Angerville) rival many Côte de Nuits Grand Crus in quality and longevity.
How long can Volnay Premier Cru age?
Top Premier Crus from great producers can age 15–25 years or more, developing complex notes of dried rose, forest floor, and spice with time.
