Volnay
ヴォルネイ
Unrivalled elegance and floral complexity among Côte de Beaune reds; exclusively red wine appellation producing silky Pinot Noir.
Volnay is one of Burgundy's most celebrated red wine appellations, located on the Côte de Beaune between Pommard and Meursault. The village sits at around 300 metres elevation, producing exclusively red wine from Pinot Noir on predominantly limestone and clay soils. Its 213 hectares include 29 Premier Cru vineyards, with Clos des Ducs, Caillerets, Champans, and Taillepieds among the most prestigious. Volnay wines are admired for their elegance, floral perfume, and silky texture rather than power.
Best for: Those who seek refinement over power in Burgundy — Volnay rewards lovers of perfume, finesse, and graceful structure.

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville
Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is Volnay's most iconic estate, founded in the early 20th century and synonymous with the appellation's finest expression. The domaine is the exclusive owner of Clos des Ducs, Volnay's only monopole Premier Cru. The late Marquis Jacques d'Angerville was a pioneering advocate for domaine bottling in Burgundy during the 1930s, fighting against négociant fraud. Today Guillaume d'Angerville continues the estate's tradition of precise, elegant, terroir-faithful winemaking with minimal intervention. The domaine farms around 15 hectares in Volnay, Pommard, Meursault, and Champagne Fourchaume.

Domaine Michel Lafarge
Domaine Michel Lafarge is one of Volnay's most revered and historic estates, with roots in the village stretching back generations. His son Frédéric now runs the 10-hectare estate with the same devotion to minimal intervention and living soils. The domaine's vineyards include some of Volnay's finest parcels: Clos des Chênes, Clos du Château des Ducs, and Vendanges Sélectionnées. Lafarge wines are celebrated for their purity, depth, and remarkable consistency across vintages.

Domaine Y. Clerget
Domaine Y. Clerget is a historic estate in the heart of Volnay whose family has farmed the Côte de Beaune since 1268, acquiring the Clos du Verseuil Premier Cru monopole in 1936. Yvon Clerget led the domaine from 1983 until his retirement after the 2009 vintage; his son Thibaud, still completing his training, sold the family's grapes to Henri Boillot for several vintages before returning in 2015 to relaunch estate bottling at age 24 — the 28th generation to make wine here. Thibaud, who trained at Domaine Hudelot-Noellat and abroad at Domaine Drouhin (Oregon) and Giesen Estate (New Zealand), farms the roughly 10 hectares organically (uncertified) since 2018, plows all the vineyards, and has pared back intervention year by year: stopping pigeage after 2019, using partial whole-cluster fermentation, cold maceration and more restrained new oak. Holdings span Volnay Premier Crus Caillerets, Champans, Carelle sous la Chapelle and Santenots alongside the Clos du Verseuil monopole, Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens, parcels in Meursault, and a plot in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. Since Thibaud's celebrated 2015 debut vintage, the domaine has become one of Volnay's most closely watched rediscoveries.

Domaine de Montille
Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy's most celebrated natural-wine pioneers, founded by the legendary lawyer and winemaker Hubert de Montille, whose career was famously documented in the film 'Mondovino'. The domaine now encompasses 16 hectares across Volnay, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Gevrey-Chambertin, managed by Hubert's children Étienne and Alix. The philosophy of very low yields, no chaptalisation, minimal oak, and no filtration was radical in its day and remains the domaine's hallmark. The wines are lean and austere in youth but develop extraordinary complexity with age.
