About Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch

Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch is a historic, women-led Riesling estate in Bernkastel-Kues, Mosel, with family winegrowing records dating back to 1636. Sole heir to the Thanisch name after the family estate split in 1988 (the other branch became Erben Müller-Burggraef), it has been a VDP member since 1910 and today is run by Sofia Thanisch (11th generation) together with her daughter Christina (12th generation), continuing an unbroken line of female leadership that began with Katharina Thanisch in 1895. The estate farms exclusively to Riesling, sustainably and largely by hand, with spontaneous fermentation and aging in Fuder casks over 50 years old. Its holdings include parcels across several VDP.Grosse Lage sites, most famously the legendary Bernkasteler Doctor — at just 3.21 hectares, one of Germany's smallest and most prized vineyards, held by the family for over 200 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch different from other wineries with "Thanisch" in the name?
In 1988 the historic Thanisch estate split between two heirs, creating two independent wineries: Erben Thanisch, which kept the Thanisch family name and remains a VDP member, and Erben Müller-Burggraef, which took the other branch's name.
What is the estate's connection to the Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard?
The family has held parcels of the Bernkasteler Doctor — a tiny 3.21-hectare site widely regarded as one of Germany's finest and most valuable vineyards — for more than 200 years, across seven generations.
Who runs the winery today?
Sofia Thanisch, the 11th generation and fourth consecutive woman to lead the estate (following Katharina in 1895), runs the winery together with her daughter Christina, who is preparing to become the fifth female generation.
How are the wines made?
The estate grows only Riesling, farmed sustainably and largely by hand, using spontaneous fermentation and aging in traditional oak Fuder casks that are over 50 years old.
Do these wines pair well with Japanese cuisine?
Yes — the bright acidity and delicate sweetness typical of this estate's Mosel Riesling pair well with sushi, tempura, and other lightly seasoned seafood dishes.
