Champetre Yama Sauvignon is a lightly sparkling, medium-style red from Winery Konohana, made from 100% Yama Sauvignon harvested in 2021 from the winery's own vineyard in Kosaka Town, Akita. Unfined, unfiltered, and unheated (muroka-namazume), it retains a small amount of natural sediment, so it should be chilled well and poured gently without shaking. Bottled with a touch of residual sweetness, it keeps Yama Sauvignon's deep color and wild, concentrated character while softening the acidity for easy, food-friendly drinking. Though the label reads 'yaya-amakuchi' (semi-sweet), the wine tastes closer to a gentle, medium-dry red than a truly sweet one. It is part of the winery's Champetre ('countryside bouquet') line of naturally sparkling, unfiltered wines.

Sommelier's Note

A rare sparkling expression of Yama Sauvignon — it keeps the grape's wild, concentrated color and character while the natural fizz and soft residual sweetness make it far more approachable than the winery's still, dry Yama Sauvignon bottlings.

New to wine?

A gentle, semi-sweet-leaning sparkling red with soft bubbles and mellow acidity — an easy first step into wild-grape Japanese wine for those who find dry reds too intense.

Food Pairings

Its soft acidity and gentle sweetness make it an easygoing match for grilled meats, yakitori, and casual home cooking; the wild Yama Sauvignon character also stands up well to slightly fatty fish and aged cheeses.

When to drink it

Casual gatherings, home barbecues, and everyday meals where a lightly fizzy, easy-drinking red fits best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Champetre Yama Sauvignon sweet or dry?
The label describes it as slightly sweet, but in practice it drinks more like a gentle, medium-dry (chuko) red — the residual sugar is subtle rather than pronounced.
What grape is Champetre Yama Sauvignon made from?
It is made from 100% Yama Sauvignon, a Japanese hybrid of wild yamabudo and Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on Winery Konohana's own vineyard in Kosaka Town, Akita.
Why does the wine have sediment, and how should it be served?
Because it is bottled unfiltered and unfined directly from the tank, a small amount of natural sediment is normal. Chill it well and pour gently without shaking to keep the sediment from clouding the glass.
Is Champetre Yama Sauvignon sparkling?
Yes, it is lightly sparkling ('bihappo'), with a natural, gentle fizz that comes from bottling with a touch of residual sugar rather than secondary fermentation dosage.
