About Welmoed

Welmoed is a historic wine estate and brand in Stellenbosch whose story began in 1690, when the land was granted under the Dutch East India Company to Jacobus van der Heyden, a relative of the founder of neighboring Meerlust. Over the following centuries the property passed through several owners, including the Van der Bijl family, who built its historic cellar and Cape Dutch gabled buildings, and the Kramer family, who established a cooperative winery on the site. Today Welmoed operates as one of the flagship brands of Stellenbosch Vineyards (which also owns Arniston Bay, Versus, and Maison du Cap), producing an accessible, award-winning range of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Rosé, Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz from vineyards on the slopes of the Helderberg mountain. Winemaker Bernard Claassen leads production, balancing the estate's 300-plus-year heritage with modern, consumer-focused winemaking.
