VDP Spätburgunder from Franken's red sandstone terraces
About Weingut Steintal
Weingut Steintal is a VDP member estate in Klingenberg am Main, in the Franken (Franconia) wine region of Germany. The estate traces its roots to the former municipal winery 'Weingut der Stadt Klingenberg,' founded in 1912. It was privatized in 2010 by Benedikt Baltes, who began transforming it into an organic, terroir-focused Spätburgunder specialist. In September 2019, when Baltes returned to the Ahr to found his own estate, the winery was renamed Weingut Steintal and management passed to his former apprentice, Philipp Aufderheide, who continues to lead it today as managing director and winemaker. The estate farms about 11 hectares across the villages of Klingenberg, Großheubach, and Bürgstadt, roughly 90% planted to Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), with smaller plots of Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and other varieties. Vines grow on steep, protected red sandstone (Buntsandstein) terraces, including the VDP.Grosse Lage sites Schlossberg (Klingenberg) and Bischofsberg (Großheubach). The estate is certified organic (EU-Bio and Naturland) and practices spontaneous fermentation and ageing in local Spessart oak, aiming for cool, mineral-driven, low-alcohol Pinot Noir.
Who Is This For?
