About Weingut Reichsgraf von Plettenberg

Based in Bad Kreuznach, Weingut Reichsgraf von Plettenberg is one of the Nahe region's most storied estates. Its roots trace to Friedrich Utsch (1732-1795), a Palatinate forest official whose daughter Margarethe married Carl Puricelli; the Puricelli family acquired a large agricultural estate with vineyards around Bretzenheim and Winzenheim in the Nahe valley in 1813. In 1911, Friedrich Christian Reichsgraf von Plettenberg married Elisabeth Puricelli, and from 1912 he developed the estate into a model winery, becoming one of the most important winegrowing pioneers on the Nahe -- the family name has been attached to the estate ever since. Today the winery is led by the fourth generation, Falk Albrecht Reichsgraf von Plettenberg (since 2015, a trained oenologist who studied in Geisenheim), who combines tradition with modern cellar technology. The estate farms roughly 35 hectares in top sites around Bad Kreuznach and Roxheim -- including Kreuznacher Kauzenberg, Kreuznacher Forst, Kreuznacher Hinkelstein, Kreuznacher Kapellenpfad, Kreuznacher Sankt Martin, Roxheimer Berg and the Schloss Plettenberg vineyard itself. Riesling accounts for around 70% of plantings, complemented by Spatburgunder, Grauburgunder, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kerner, Gewurztraminer and Dornfelder, made across dry (trocken), off-dry (feinherb) and sweet (lieblich) styles.
