About Weingut Künstler
Weingut Künstler is one of the benchmark dry Riesling estates in Germany's Rheingau region, based in Hochheim am Main. It was founded in 1965 by Franz Künstler, whose family had grown grapes in South Moravia since 1648 before being expelled from the region after World War II; Franz had served as cellar master at the neighboring Domdechant Werner estate from 1951 before establishing his own winery. His son Gunter Künstler took over in 1992 and has led the estate to the top ranks of the Rheingau, joining the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) in 1994 and acquiring the historic Aschrott estate in 1996. Today the estate farms around 50 hectares, predominantly Riesling, across top sites in Hochheim — Hölle, Kirchenstück, Domdechaney, and Reichestal — plus holdings in Kostheim, Rüdesheim, and Assmannshausen. Künstler is renowned for powerful, mineral-driven dry Rieslings that express the limestone soils of Hochheim, alongside elegant Spätburgunder reds, and consistently earns top scores from critics such as James Suckling and Falstaff.
