Stanford's cool-climate wine-and-brewery estate since 2003

About Walker Bay Estate

Founded in 2003 when its first vines were planted near the historic village of Stanford in South Africa's Western Cape, Walker Bay Estate is the winemaking arm of a diversified business built by Welsh-born mining engineer William "Bill" Trew. The vineyards lie in the shadow of the Klein River Mountains, just 9km from the Atlantic Ocean, where decomposed granite, shale and limestone soils combine with a cool maritime climate to give the grapes a long, even ripening period. The first wines were released under the Walker Bay Vineyards label in 2007, and 2012 marked the estate's first vintage from its purpose-built winery. Winemaker Anneke Steenkamp crafts a range spanning Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and the estate's signature red blend, Amesteca — named after the Romanian word for "fusion." The property is also home to Birkenhead Brewery, South Africa's second-oldest microbrewery, founded in 1998, making Walker Bay Estate a rare combined wine-and-beer destination on the Stanford Wine Route.
