Yamano-Vin-Se Kamoshika is an orange (skin-contact) wine from Vin d'Omachi Ferme36, the small family winery run by Yoshio Yano at the foot of Japan's Northern Alps in Omachi, Nagano. Unlike the estate-grown Remerciements line, Kamoshika is made from purchased Pinot Gris grown by Kisarizato Farm Suzuki in Akashina, Azumino City, Nagano -- fermented on its skins in the traditional Georgian qvevri-inspired method for roughly two months with wild yeast, then aged about eight months before bottling. Depending on the vintage the base Pinot Gris is occasionally blended with a small proportion of Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, but the wine is consistently built around Pinot Gris skin contact. The name 'Kamoshika' (Japanese serow, a native mountain goat-antelope) nods to the wild Northern Alps foothills where the winery is based. The result sits between white and red: fruity like a white wine yet savory and textured like a red, with aromas of pomegranate, ripe orange peel and a faintly wild, gamey note.

Sommelier's Note

One of the most distinctive orange wines coming out of Nagano -- Pinot Gris skin contact done with real restraint, tasting like a white and a red having a conversation.

New to wine?

A friendly first step into orange wine -- fruity and easy like a white, but with the depth and umami of a red.

Food Pairings

The wine's gentle tannin and citrus-pomegranate character make it versatile with everything from mountain vegetables (sansai) to game meat and grilled dishes -- try it with venison, duck, or char-grilled wild mushrooms.

When to drink it

Autumn dinners featuring game or mountain vegetables, casual gatherings with adventurous wine drinkers.

Terroir & Winemaking

Made from Pinot Gris grown by Kisarizato Farm Suzuki in Akashina, Azumino City, Nagano (purchased fruit, not estate-grown), hand-harvested in mid-September. Whole berries ferment on their skins with wild yeast for roughly two months, then age about eight months in stainless steel before bottling with minimal sulfites and no fining or filtration. Recent vintages: 2023 (Pinot Gris ~79% / Chardonnay ~21%, ABV 12.0%), 2024 (Pinot Gris ~92% / Pinot Noir ~8%, ABV 11.8%), 2025 (Pinot Gris 100%, ABV 11.9%) -- the exact blend shifts slightly each vintage depending on the harvest.

What grapes are used in Kamoshika?
The wine is built around Pinot Gris purchased from Kisarizato Farm Suzuki in Akashina, Azumino City, Nagano. Depending on the vintage it is either 100% Pinot Gris or blended with a small proportion of Chardonnay or Pinot Noir.
What food pairs well with Kamoshika?
Its gentle tannin and citrus-pomegranate profile pair beautifully with mountain vegetables (sansai), game meat like venison and duck, grilled mushrooms, and miso-glazed grilled fish.
