Kiyomai Taru-juku Aka is a single-varietal red wine from Tokachi Makibanoie Winery made entirely from Kiyomai, a cold-hardy hybrid grape bred in 1975 in Ikeda Town by crossing the Kiyomi variety (its mother) with a wild mountain grape (Vitis amurensis, its father) and officially registered in 2000. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for roughly 8 to 12 months, producing a deep reddish-purple wine with a crisp, spicy oak-aged aroma and a mellow, well-rounded palate that inherits the bright, food-friendly acidity of its Kiyomi parent.

Sommelier's Note

Kiyomai shows what Tokachi's own bred grape can do with a little oak: a mellow, spice-kissed red that keeps its parent Kiyomi's refreshing acidity intact.

New to wine?

A gentle, easy-drinking introduction to Japanese hybrid red wines — the oak aging softens any sharpness while the natural acidity keeps it refreshing.

Food Pairings

A versatile medium-bodied red that pairs well with grilled or roasted meats, yakitori with savory-sweet glaze, and aged cheeses; the bright acidity also cuts through richer, umami-forward dishes.

When to drink it

Everyday dinners with Japanese cuisine, casual gatherings, or as a gift showcasing Tokachi's local grape varieties.
