Founded in 1899, Soryu Winery is one of the most historic producers in Katsunuma, the birthplace of Japanese winemaking. Named after the Azure Dragon, guardian deity of the East in Chinese mythology, the winery began as a cooperative venture among local grape growers before becoming a private, family-run company in 1943. Soryu was a pioneer of additive-free (sulfite-free) wine in Japan, introducing its signature no-additive line in 1996. Today it works with more than 100 long-standing contract growers around Katsunuma, who supply roughly 90% of its fruit, and produces a wide range of styles from crisp, citrus-driven Koshu to fuller-bodied reds, alongside everyday table wines beloved locally. Its wines have repeatedly won awards at the Japan Wine Competition and Japan Wine Challenge, including golds for its Citrus Scent Koshu and barrel-fermented Koshu bottlings.
