Soleil Syrah is a single-varietal red made entirely from Syrah grown on Soleil Wine's own vineyard in the Yahata district of Yamanashi City, at roughly 500 meters elevation. The vines were planted in 2008 as part of the winery's response to climate warming, trained on a single-cordon (ichimonji tanshou) system. Syrah's thin skins make the grape prone to splitting in Japan's rainy pre-harvest period, but that same humidity is thought to intensify the variety's signature peppery aromatic note. After fermentation, the wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation and is aged for eight months in French oak, about a third of it new. It is bottled unfiltered, so sediment and tartrate crystals may form in the bottle. The wine belongs to the 'Kiroku' (chronicle) series of single-varietal bottlings that mark each vintage's individual character rather than blending it away.
Proof that Syrah doesn't need heat to show its peppery signature — Yamanashi's humidity coaxes out the spice that warm-climate versions of the grape often lack.
