Selbach-Oster

ゼルバッハ・オスター

2024 Vinum Mosel Winery of the Year, mastering slate-driven Riesling since 1661.

About Selbach-Oster

Founded on a union of two winemaking families in 1661, Selbach-Oster is a family-run estate in Zeltingen at the heart of the Mittelmosel. Johannes and Barbara Selbach farm 25 hectares of steep, Devonian slate vineyards — including the celebrated Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Schlossberg and Himmelreich sites — 91% planted to Riesling. The guiding philosophy is 'hands off in the cellar, hands on in the vineyard': meticulous, largely manual work in the vines paired with minimal-intervention winemaking in traditional 1,000-litre Fuder casks and stainless steel, letting each vineyard's slate terroir speak for itself. The range spans crisp dry Trocken and Grosses Gewächs to classic Prädikat and noble sweet Rieslings, plus a small amount of Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. In the 2024 Vinum Weinguide, Selbach-Oster was named Winery of the Year for the Mosel region.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Selbach-Oster's winemaking philosophy?
Johannes Selbach sums it up as 'hands off in the cellar, hands on in the vineyard' — meticulous manual vineyard work paired with minimal-intervention fermentation in traditional Fuder casks, letting each site's slate terroir express itself.
Which vineyards are Selbach-Oster best known for?
Their flagship sites around Zeltingen are Sonnenuhr, Schlossberg and Himmelreich — steep, south-facing slate vineyards along the Mosel that produce some of the region's most mineral-driven Rieslings.
Why did Selbach-Oster win the 2024 Vinum award?
Vinum's 2024 Weinguide named Selbach-Oster 'Winery of the Year' for the Mosel region, recognizing decades of consistent quality and the estate's role in showcasing the region's slate-soil Riesling at its best.
Are Selbach-Oster wines suitable for aging?
Yes. Thanks to the natural acidity and mineral structure from their old-vine, slate-soil Riesling, both Prädikat and dry Grosses Gewächs bottlings reward extended cellaring.
Do Selbach-Oster Rieslings pair well with Japanese cuisine?
Very well — the bright acidity and pure mineral character make them a natural match for sushi, tempura and other delicately seasoned Japanese dishes.
