Schloss Sommerhausen

Since 1435: VDP estate crafting Franken's mineral Silvaner.
About Schloss Sommerhausen
Schloss Sommerhausen is a historic VDP member estate in the village of Sommerhausen, Franken, founded in 1435 by Schenk Konrad IV von Limpurg; its castle cellar once produced coronation wines for German kings and Holy Roman emperors. Since 1968 the estate has been in the hands of the Steinmann family, now led by Martin Steinmann in the 15th generation. The organically farmed vineyards (certified since 2011) sit on Muschelkalk (shell limestone) soils and are planted predominantly to Silvaner, Riesling and Burgundy varieties, alongside aromatic specialties such as Muskateller, Scheurebe and Gewürztraminer. The VDP.ERSTE LAGE sites Steinbach and Reifenstein, together with the VDP.GROSSE LAGE Alttenberg 1172, yield mineral, age-worthy wines that express the estate's limestone terroir. Schloss Sommerhausen is also known for traditional-method sparkling wines aged in its 15th-century cellar.
