Sainte Neige Winery's daily-drinking dry white made from Verdelet (Seibel 9110), a rare French-American hybrid grape that is virtually unseen in Japan outside Sainte Neige's Yamagata lineup. Made from 100% hand-picked Verdelet grown by contracted farmers in the Kaminoyama district at the foot of Mt. Zao in Yamagata Prefecture, it is bottled in the traditional Japanese 1.8-liter isshobin jug format with a resin cap, part of the winery's everyday "Budoshu" line alongside its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot counterparts. It shows a pale, bright straw-yellow color and fragrant citrus-fruit aromas, with the balanced fruit and crisp acidity typical of the variety. Positioned as an accessible, generously sized dry white for everyday drinking rather than a limited single-vineyard release.
Verdelet is a grape almost no one outside Sainte Neige's Yamagata lineup bottles in Japan — a genuinely rare find for anyone curious about the outer edges of Japanese viticulture.
New to wine?
A rare chance to try Verdelet, a little-known hybrid grape, in an easy-drinking, citrusy dry white — a fun way to explore Japan's lesser-known grape varieties.
Food Pairings
The bright citrus fruit and crisp acidity make it a natural match for lightly seasoned seafood and salads — grilled white fish, sashimi with ponzu, or salt-grilled saba. Its zippy, food-friendly character also cuts nicely through fried foods such as tempura or chicken karaage.
When to drink it
Everyday dinners, casual gatherings sharing the generous isshobin format, and as an introduction to unusual Japanese-grown grape varieties.
