Podere Il Castellaccio
ポデーレ・イル・カステッラッチョ
Reviving rare Tuscan natives on Bolgheri's Segalari hill.
Podere Il Castellaccio is a family-run estate on the Segalari hill in Castagneto Carducci, within the Bolgheri DOC. Founder Alessandro Scappini, born and raised in Bolgheri, launched the winery in 2009, but the land has belonged to his family since the 1960s, when his grandfather Luigi Corradini acquired it. The estate's 3.5 hectares of vines average 40 years of age and are planted mostly to rare Tuscan native varieties -- Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Foglia Tonda, and Pugnitello -- with a hectare of Cabernet Franc added in 2014 on a steep terraced slope. Grapes are farmed organically and biodynamically, harvested by hand, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The flagship Il Castellaccio, a Bolgheri Superiore DOC blending 95% Cabernet Franc with 5% Pugnitello, debuted with the 2018 vintage and earned 94 points from Decanter. The range also includes Orio (Bolgheri Rosso), Dinostro (Sangiovese IGT Toscana), Valente (a 70% Sangiovese blend with Ciliegiolo, Foglia Tonda, and Pugnitello), and Somatico (a Pugnitello IGT Toscana). Scappini also serves on the board of the Bolgheri DOC Consortium.
