P.J. ヴァルケンベルク

The historic house behind the original Liebfraumilch.

About P.J. Valckenberg

Founded in Worms in 1786, P.J. Valckenberg is one of Rheinhessen's oldest wine trading houses. In 1808 its founder, Peter Joseph Valckenberg, acquired the vineyards surrounding the historic Liebfrauenkirche, later renamed Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück, and in 1908 registered "Madonna Liebfraumilch" as one of Germany's first trademarked wines — a name now inseparable from the story of Liebfraumilch itself. Today the company continues as a Rheinhessen wine trading house and estate manager, and still holds a share of the historic Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück vineyard alongside other Worms producers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P.J. Valckenberg connected to the origin of Liebfraumilch?
Yes. In 1808 the company's founder acquired the vineyards around Worms' Liebfrauenkirche, later renamed Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück, and in 1908 registered "Madonna Liebfraumilch" as one of Germany's first trademarked wines.
Where is P.J. Valckenberg based?
The company was founded in Worms, Rheinhessen, in 1786; its wine trading business is today headquartered nearby in Westhofen, also in Rheinhessen.
Does Valckenberg still own part of the historic Liebfraumilch vineyard?
Yes. Valckenberg remains one of several co-owners of the Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück vineyard around the Liebfrauenkirche in Worms, alongside other Worms producers such as Schembs, Spohr and Gutzler.
Is the "Liebfraumilch" sold widely today the same as Valckenberg's original?
Not exactly. Once the name went unregulated in the 20th century, many producers used it for inexpensive blended wines, diluting its reputation. Valckenberg's Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück wine reflects the original single-vineyard style.
