The family traces its roots in Aÿ to 1522, and Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat founded the company in 1910, acquiring the historic chalk cellars of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The house is best known for Clos des Goisses, a walled 5.83-hectare single vineyard on a steep south-facing slope above the Marne, acquired in 1935. First made as a single-vineyard blend called Vin des Goisses, it was renamed Clos des Goisses in 1959. Pinot Noir is the house's signature variety.
