Founded in 1997 in Suvereto, on the Tuscan Coast (Alta Maremma / Val di Cornia), Petra was established by Vittorio Moretti — owner of the renowned Franciacorta producer Bellavista — together with his daughter Francesca. The 300-hectare estate, a third of which is planted with vines, lies just 15 kilometers from Bolgheri and benefits from a unique microclimate shaped by the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. Petra is world-renowned for its striking gravity-flow winery designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta: a dramatic cylinder of brick and Prun stone that sinks 150 meters into the hillside, allowing wine to move by gravity alone rather than mechanical pumping. The estate focuses on Bordeaux varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc — alongside Sangiovese, producing elegant, powerful Super Tuscan wines acclaimed by critics such as James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast.
