NORA Rouge

ノラ・ルージュ

Nora-Kura

Merlot · Zweigelt · Pinot Noir

About this wine

NORA Rouge is the flagship red blend of Nora-Kura, the pioneering natural wine estate of Ken and Kazuko Sasaki in Hokuto City, Hokkaido. The blend combines Merlot grown in Oshima, Zweigelt and Pinot Noir from Yoichi, and Pinot Noir from the Sasakis' own Bungetsu vineyard, fermented entirely with indigenous yeast and bottled with no added sulfites. True to the Nora series' identity, the label deliberately omits the grape composition, inviting drinkers to taste without preconception. The result is a light-to-medium-bodied red with pure fruit, saline minerality, and a distinctive umami depth reminiscent of dashi broth, aged around seven months in neutral oak before release.

Beginner's Note

A gentle, fruit-forward gateway into Japanese natural wine — light-bodied and free of the harsh edges sometimes found in mass-produced reds.

Sommelier's Note

"One of Hokkaido's most talked-about natural reds — a wine that trades varietal bravado for pure, dashi-like umami. A must-try for anyone serious about Japanese natural wine."

Food Pairings

The umami-driven, dashi-like character makes this wine a natural match for Japanese cuisine: soy-simmered dishes (nimono), grilled unagi with tare sauce, and mushroom-based dishes all bring out its savory depth. It also pairs well with roasted duck, grilled lamb, and other dishes with mild gamey notes.

When to drink it

Casual dinners with friends, izakaya-style meals, and introductory natural wine tastings.
