Izu Petit Verdot is a single-varietal red wine from Naka Izu Winery Chateau T.S., made entirely from Petit Verdot grapes grown in Izu's warm climate in Izu City, Shizuoka. It shows a deep, lustrous red-black color, with rich aromas of blueberry and cassis intertwined with oak-derived spice notes such as nutmeg and coriander. On the palate it has moderate acidity and firm, spicy tannins that give the wine depth and structure, finishing with a concentrated, elegant richness. The wine has been awarded consistently at the Japan Wine Competition across vintages -- Bronze for the 2020 vintage (2024 edition), Gold for the 2021 vintage (2025 edition), and Bronze for the 2022 vintage (2026 edition, the current release) -- making it one of the winery's most decorated reds.
Petit Verdot rarely stands alone as a single varietal, but Izu's warm climate lets it ripen fully here -- this is one of the most structured, age-worthy reds in the winery's entire lineup.
New to wine?
A bold, full-bodied red for those ready to move beyond light wines -- firm tannins and dark fruit make it a great match for a good steak.
Food Pairings
A full-bodied wine built for hearty fare -- the producer itself recommends it with thick-cut steaks such as ribeye, where the meat's richness softens the wine's firm tannins and highlights its dark fruit character. Also pairs well with grilled red meats, beef stews, and aged hard cheeses.
When to drink it
