Montevertine

モンテヴェルティーネ

The iconic pioneer of pure Sangiovese and Tuscan elegance.

Located in Radda in Chianti, Montevertine is a legendary estate that played a pivotal role in the history of Tuscan wine. Founded by Sergio Manetti in 1967, the estate famously withdrew from the Chianti Classico consortium in 1981 over disagreements with the regulations, most notably the mandatory inclusion of white grapes such as Trebbiano. Since Sergio's passing in 2000, his son Martino Manetti has led the estate. Their flagship wine, Le Pergole Torte, is a pure Sangiovese masterpiece bottled as Toscana IGT rather than Chianti Classico DOCG, and it consistently ranks among Italy's finest wines. The estate remains committed to traditional winemaking, using concrete vats and large Slavonian oak barrels to produce wines of exceptional elegance, purity, and longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Le Pergole Torte not labeled as Chianti Classico?
Montevertine left the Chianti Classico consortium in 1981 to keep producing 100% Sangiovese, which conflicted with the regulations of the time that required blending in white grapes. As a result, the wine is released as Toscana IGT.
What is the winemaking style of Montevertine?
The estate employs traditional methods, including fermentation in concrete vats and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels, to preserve the purity of the fruit.
Who runs Montevertine today?
The estate was founded by Sergio Manetti in 1967. Since his passing in 2000, his son Martino Manetti has continued the family's winemaking philosophy.
Does Montevertine wine pair well with Japanese cuisine?
Yes, the high acidity and refined tannins of their Sangiovese make it an excellent pairing for Japanese dishes such as grilled wagyu beef, soy-glazed duck, or mushroom-based hot pot.
