Luddite
ラディット
A Bot River pioneer of Shiraz, made the lo-fi way — no shortcuts, just patience.
About Luddite
Luddite is a small, family-run winery on the eastern slopes of the Houw Hoek Mountains just outside Bot River, South Africa, founded in 1999 by Niels and Penny Verburg with the sole aim of making world-class Shiraz. The winery's name honours the 19th-century English Luddites who resisted the Industrial Revolution, reflecting the Verburgs' lo-fi, minimal-intervention philosophy: "technology and mechanisation will never be a substitute for passion." Niels — a respected Cape Winemakers Guild member who honed his craft in France, Chile, New Zealand, Australia and Greece before returning home — was among the first to plant Shiraz in Bot River, and dry-farms the estate's organically managed vineyards without irrigation. The flagship Luddite Shiraz is joined by a skin-contact, old-wood-aged Chenin Blanc and the Saboteur range: a Shiraz-led red blend (with Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre) and a Chenin Blanc-led white blend (with Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc). Daughter Alice Verburg has since joined the winemaking team, bringing a second generation to the estate.
Who Is This For?
For drinkers who want honest, terroir-driven South African Shiraz and Chenin Blanc from a genuine family estate rather than a technology-polished brand.
