La Ca' Növa
ラ・カ・ノーヴァ
Under-the-radar Rocca family Barbaresco from Montefico and Montestefano, scored in the high 90s by Vinous.
Founded in the 1970s by the Rocca family out of a 19th-century farmhouse near the heart of Barbaresco, La Ca' Növa is today run by fourth-generation grower Pietro Rocca together with his brothers Giulio and Franco, and Pietro's sons Marco (winemaker) and Ivan (viticulturist). Before bottling their own wine, the family sold grapes to Angelo Gaja. From about 14 hectares spread across some of the appellation's most storied crus — Ovello, Cole, Loreto, Montefico, and Montestefano — the estate produces only around 13,000 bottles of Barbaresco a year, split between an estate blend and two single-vineyard bottlings, Montefico and Montestefano. Winemaking remains resolutely traditional: native-yeast fermentation without temperature control, the submerged-cap method, and aging in large neutral Austrian oak casks. Critic Antonio Galloni of Vinous has called La Ca' Növa "the single most under-the-radar winery in all of Piedmont," regularly scoring its wines in the mid-to-high 90s, and Forbes gave the estate an honorable mention among Barbaresco's top 25 producers in 2019.
