Family-run grower Champagne from the chalk hill of Montgueux, built on Chardonnay

About Jean Guérinot

Jean Guérinot is a family-run récoltant-manipulant Champagne house based in Montgueux, a chalk hill that rises above the plain of Troyes in the Aube. Colette and Jean Guérinot planted their first Chardonnay vines on the slopes of Montgueux in the early 1970s, and the first bottles of Champagne Guérinot appeared in 1982. Today the grandson, Maxime Guérinot, carries on the estate, which farms about 6 hectares, mostly in Montgueux, and holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) level 3 certification. The range is built around Chardonnay: a brut blanc de blancs (also in magnum), a rosé, a cuvée de réserve and a 2002 vintage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Champagne Jean Guérinot located?
The estate is at 2 rue Chanet in Montgueux, a village on a chalk hill just outside Troyes in the Aube département of the Champagne region.
What kind of Champagne producer is Jean Guérinot?
It is a récoltant-manipulant: a grower who makes and sells Champagne from its own grapes. The family planted its first Chardonnay in the early 1970s and released its first Champagne in 1982.
What does Jean Guérinot produce?
The range centres on Chardonnay: a brut blanc de blancs (also in magnum), a rosé, a cuvée de réserve and a 2002 vintage Champagne.
Why is Montgueux known for Chardonnay?
Montgueux is a chalky hill that stands apart from the main Champagne areas, and its white, chalk-rich soil suits Chardonnay. The village is nicknamed the "Montrachet de la Champagne", a name the estate itself uses.
Is Jean Guérinot environmentally certified?
Yes. According to the estate, it holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) level 3 certification, and it has stopped using herbicides in favour of soil work and grass cover between the rows.
