Jacques Puffeney is a legendary Jura winemaker based in Arbois, affectionately nicknamed 'Le Pape d'Arbois' (the Pope of Arbois) by his peers for his decades-long mastery of the region's traditional, oxidative winemaking style. He began working the vines with his father in 1962 and released his first vintage in 1964, going on to farm the full range of Jura's permitted grape varieties, most notably Savagnin for his celebrated Vin Jaune. After vinifying his 52nd and final full vintage in 2014, Puffeney sold the majority of his roughly 4.2-hectare estate to Domaine du Pélican (the d'Angerville family) in January 2015, while retaining a small plot of Trousseau and Savagnin to produce around 2,000 bottles a year as a semi-retired grower. His long-aged Vin Jaune — some cuvées matured over eight years under flor — remains a benchmark for the appellation, with his final release, the 2014 Vin Jaune, only reaching the market in 2021.
